Undated (circa 1890s). viii, 322pp, black and white frontispiece. Red cloth-covered boards; colour design and gilt titles on front and spine; decorative initial letter at start of chapters, tail piece at the end of most chapters. 8vo. Sun-faded spine, lightly rubbed and bumped spine ends; corners rubbed and rounded. Top text block edge dusty, remaining edges tanned and starting to fox. Endpapers moderately tanned, light foxing to prelims. Presentation plate on front pastedown (dated 1899). Internally gutters are slightly stretched in a number of places and there's occasional spotting to pages, otherwise neat, clean, bright and tight. This volume has been carefully condensed and edited from Life by Jared Sparks and Life and Times by James Parton.
