Caspar John grew up in the harsh, Bohemian world of his painter father, Augustus, and joined the Royal Navy in 1916 at the age of 13. He was no ordinary sailor - a Naval pioneer and First Sea Lord in the 1960s - but a painful and crippling illness cut short his career, as his daughter reveals in this telling memoir of a war time sailor.
