[1918]. 70pp, with 32 tipped in, mounted sketches. In paper-covered boards with tipped in colour illustration on front panel. Tall 8vo. Boards are heavily bumped on corners, chipped and cracking around spine joints, mildly soiled with some staining on front panel and long scuff on back cover. Front free endpaper crudely removed, else internally very clean, neat, bright and tight. The images are all clean and crisp. A collection of 32 sketches of Boulogne, touched with affection, showing scenes such as The Jetty and the Fisherman's Quarter, The Quai Gambetta, The Porte des Dunes and Rue du Palais: A record of Boulogne in past time. Martin Hardie was a printmaker, writer and museum curator and an expert watercolourist. The served as an army officer during the first world war, reaching the rank of Captain. These sketches and watercolours reflect some of his experiences in France during the war.
