<p>2nd edition.  xxiv, 25-566, 10, [4]pp, with one folding plate fronting the title page.  In plain paper-covered boards.  8vo.  Boards detached and marked, heavily worn, rubbed all round edges, cracked and crumbling around joints and spine ends.  Some toning and spotting to first and last few leaves (including folding plate and title page), occasional edge damage to pages and pencil annotations in margins, previously owner's name inked on title page.  Compression crease (from folding plate) affects first few leaves.  Text block generally robust and complete.</p> <p>A very hard to find, early edition of this exposition of phrenology, a practice of widespread interest in the 19th century now widely considered psuedoscience.  Prenologists considered that parts of the brain, called organs, were responsible for specific mental and behavioural characteristics.</p>
